Bridgewater, NS – Today, Bridgewater Ready Mix announced that it has taken an important step towards supporting the federal and provincial government’s climate goals by significantly reducing the carbon footprint of the ready-mix concrete it sells.

“As a locally owned and operated business, we take our responsibility to the community and our customers seriously and want to do our part for a sustainable future,” said Joel Westin, President of Bridgewater Ready Mix. “Concrete is a very good but carbon intense building material, and as an industry we are committed to reducing the carbon footprint of our products without compromising the durable, resilient, versatile, and costeffective nature of concrete that our customers rely on.”
Cement is the primary ingredient in the production of concrete and by switching from General Use Cement (GU) to General Use Limestone Cement (GUL), Bridgewater Ready Mix will reduce the carbon footprint of its inputs by 12%, which corresponds to a reduction of 270 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year and a reduction of 1,900 metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2030.
Bridgewater Ready Mix serves the South Shore from Port Mouton to St. Margaret’s Bay with seven trucks and three concrete pumps. The company’s main focus is on the residential market but also caters to commercial projects with its concrete solutions.
To better meet customer demand, the company is currently constructing a new multimillion-dollar ready-mix concrete plant in the Town of Bridgewater’s industrial park. The 750 square metre facility will include a plant, office, and a four-bay garage, which is expected to be operational in the summer of 2023 and employ 12 people.
According to Bridgewater Ready Mix’s General Manager David Hardy, sustainability needs to be worked into everything the company does.
“The transition to General Use Limestone Cement is a good improvement as it allows for a reduction in greenhouse gases with no significant change in concrete performance,” said Mr. Hardy. “Focusing on efficiency and sustainability is going to ensure we are wellequipped as a producer to meet growing demand for less carbon intense building materials and drive long-term sustainable growth.”
Located on Nova Scotia’s South Shore, Bridgewater Ready Mix has been providing quality concrete solutions for more than 35 years.
