Bridgewater Ready Mix’s New Ownership Positions Company for Continued Success

July 31, 2023

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bridgewater, NS – Today, Bridgewater Ready Mix announced that it has welcomed new ownership, positioning the company for continued success.

Joel Westin, who has served as the President of Bridgewater Ready Mix since September 2021, has acquired the company from its previous shareholders. The deal was effective April 30, 2023.

This ends the interim period in which Lloyd Bonang, local businessman and owner of South Shore Ready Mix, had to step out of his role as a silent partner to support the company following the passing of the former President of Bridgewater Ready Mix, Malcolm Craft. Mr. Bonang will no longer be involved in the company going forward.

“I am glad the company has successfully transitioned to a new owner,” said Paul Belliveau, Partner at AC Belliveau Veinotte Inc. and the company’s long time independent accountant. “I know Joel well and I am confident that under his leadership, Bridgewater Ready Mix will continue to meet the needs of residential and commercial customers on the South Shore for years to come.”

With seven trucks and three concrete pumps, Bridgewater Ready Mix offers residential and commercial concrete solutions from Port Mouton to St. Margarets Bay, from its base in Bridgewater Industrial Park.

“This is a transitional time for Bridgewater Ready Mix and the concrete industry as a whole,” said Joel Westin, President and Owner of Bridgewater Ready Mix. “Our soon to be completed multi-million-dollar ready-mix concrete plant will help us to reduce our carbon footprint in line with the federal and provincial governments’ climate goals, all while better servicing our customers and providing skilled jobs in rural Nova Scotia.”

Bridgewater Ready Mix is focused on modernization and increasing sustainability throughout its operations, without compromising the durable, resilient, versatile, and cost-effective nature of its concrete products.

The company is taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint by:

  • Transitioning from General Use Cement (GU) to General Use Limestone Cement (GUL), eliminating 1,900 metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2030 (approximately 12% of inputs).

  • Reviewing mix designs to increase cement replaced by supplementary cementitious materials.

  • Becoming a Renewable to Retail customer of the Mersey River Wind Project, near Milton, NS.

  • Purchasing an electric work truck and actively exploring zero-emission mixer trucks, pump trucks and dump trucks.

“By focusing on efficiency and sustainability and working closely with industry partners and governments at all levels to meet our shared net-zero commitment, I am confident that Bridgewater Ready Mix is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for less carbon intense building materials and drive long-term sustainable growth,” said Joel Westin.
